Egypt utilizes its mineral resources and expands USD inflow Sources

Updated: Oct 20, 2022

The new black sands industrial complex is a step towards utilizing Egypt's resources and expanding the Sources of USD inflow to our economy.

A joint venture between the National Service Projects Organization،, National Investment Bank, Kafr al-sheik governorate, Nuclear Materials Authority, and The Egyptian Company for Mineral Resources.

During the complex's opening, president Abd EL Fatah El Sisi welcomed the private sector to invest in the black sands project, which the government will share with the investors the studies and the know-how to fasten the setup and production cycle for all investors.

Egypt owns more than 400 kilometers of black sand resources across the Mediterranean shore, the Red Sea, and Aswan.

Apart from a USD inflow portfolio that the government is working on, Egypt seeks a total export revenue of USD 100 mn/year in addition to a reduction of USD 50 mn/year from the import sheets through the production of the industrial complex.

The first 100% electric dredger in the world, " Tahya Misr," joined the service at the complex with a capacity of 2,500 tonnes per hour and an annual production of various mineral resources for the complex factories and refiners as follows:

  • Ilmenite 298K Ton/Year

  • Magnetite 12K Ton/Year

  • Zircon 25K Ton/Year

  • Garnet 23K Ton/Year

  • Rutile11K Ton/Year

  • Monazite 145 Ton/Year

Two major elements

The current levels of Ilmenite production, an essential ore for titanium production, make Egypt among the top 10 producers worldwide and the top 3 in Africa, an element critical for aircraft and missile production, among many other production cycles, in a world-stressed by the Ukraine war.

Magnetite (Fe3O4), one of two types of iron ore with a high concentration of iron, is a feedstock for steel producers and is characterized by its low carbon footprint.

While Garnet, Rutile, and Monazite are also secondary elements for the production process of the previous elements, they are still essential in Ceramic, water filtering systems, paper production, and many more industrial products.
